Puerto Rico - April 2007

I recently returned from a short vacation to Puerto Rico. We spent most of the time on the island of Vieques and spent the last day in Old San Juan. Here are some "slideshows" from the trip, however, the most incredible part of the trip — the bioluminescent bay — would not have photographed well but was alone worth the trip. I feel compelled to point out that bioluminescent bays are fragile ecosystems and that it is endangered by unregulated development. Light pollution takes away from it's beauty and pollution from land and boats threaten the bioluminescent micro-organisms. The second night we were there there were three large yachts anchored at the entrance to the bay with really bright lights shining outside with their occupants inside the air-conditioned cabins (which means they were running their generators). The tour we took was on an electrically powered pontoon boat. While I recommend going to see the bioluminescence, if you do, please make sure that you don't go via gasoline powered boats!
